SAY IT LOUD — SAY IT PROUD

Words so bold they look like they’re jumping off your quilt! In TEXT THAT POPS, textile artist Davey Powell teaches you how to draw lettering and bring it to life with a block-shadow. Drawing on the visual language of his fairground upbringing, Davey will walk you through the full process, from sketching on paper to cutting, layering, and stitching them into a finished appliqué piece.

YOUR INSTRUCTOR

Davey Powell headshot.jpeg

Davey Powell is a queer textile artist from South Shields, UK, whose bold quilted forms explore heritage, identity, and belonging. Raised on a traveling fairground, he grew up surrounded by decorative lettering and vivid signage, the very visual language he now reclaims and reworks through a queer lens in his textile practice. A Fashion Design graduate of Nottingham Trent University with a background in London's latex fashion scene, Davey brings a trained eye for typography and composition to every piece he makes. His work has been shown at St Martins Lane London, Vane Gallery, the National Glass Centre, and as part of Seven Crafted Stories at London Craft Week 2026.
